I tried a whole bunch of stuff and got nowhere but this has magically done the trick.. which was especially surprising because when I checked off disable all sound effects, the Apply box didn't even light up. I checked it on and off a few times and apply never shaded in for me to click on. Eventually I just clicked ok and no more distortion.
Thanks!
